November, 2009 - Congressional Bills concerning Historic Preservation

There are 2 new bills being introduced into Congress that would enhance federal tax incentives for historic preservation.

1. Community Restoration and Revitalization Act:This would increase the credit and make it transferable for smaller projects allowing the 10% non-historic credit to be used for residential rentals, reducing the substantial rehab test, enabling state credits to work more effectively with the federal credit, and increasing the credit for rehabilitation projects that incorporate energy efficiency improvements. Visit the National Trust for Historic Preservation to learn more.

2. Historic Homeowners Revitilization Act of 2009: This would create a 20 percent tax credit-up to $60,000-for homeowners who make expenditures to rehabilitate certified historic structures in a way consistent with the historic character of the home and neighbor hood in which the home is located.

* to date they have not been enacted.

The full text of these bills can be found at the Library of Congress website.
